Vegetable Man, Khartoum
Excerpt from Light Gesture & Color:
Sometimes thereâ°ÛȘs not a lot to say about a photograph. Youâ°ÛȘre walking along and Bam!Ă„ĂItâ°ÛȘs in your lap. This is the kind of thing that you really donâ°ÛȘt have time to think about.Ă„Ă
If youâ°ÛȘre like me you donâ°ÛȘt want to ask someone to pose for you. You know that it willĂ„Ăchange the whole thing that attracted you in the first place. Also, if you donâ°ÛȘt speak theĂ„Ălanguage you know youâ°ÛȘll screw up the request.
I was walking along in a market in Omdurman, a suburb of Khartoum, in the Sudan.
The man, his gesture of relaxation, his â°ĂĂworkâ°Û and the gestures of all the vegetables wereĂ„Ăgreat for me.Ă„Ă
As I approached him I put the camera up to my eye, got two frames, smiled at him andĂ„Ămade a thank you gesture, and I was gone.
