Aerial, NYC
Excerpt from Light Gesture & Color:
Gesture can reveal the essence and character of anything from a mountain range to a mayfly.
It certainly can reveal in a moment the unique quality of a city.
Whenever I could swing it in terms of time and money I would rent a helicopter, go up and shoot.
No plan, no assignment just the kick of looking down at the city.
I have a tendency, all other things being equal, to shoot with long lenses, but on this day the clouds, the light, kind of called out for a wide angle to make my shot.
I was trying to be as inclusive as possible. I didn’t want to zero in with a tele to get one particular aspect of the city.
I wanted it all from uptown to the downtown tip of Manhattan, including the World Trade Center in the background and the Empire State Building as my anchor.
